According to old Chinese folklore, the sequence of the zodiac signs was based on a race to the Heavenly Gate. The Jade Emperor wanted 12 animals to be his bodyguards. Therefore, he held a race for all the animals to join. The rule was simple, the faster the animal to reach the Heavenly gate, the worthier it is, and the more benefit it will get.

The Early Risers: The Rat & The Ox

The race started the next day. The rat woke up early that day to make sure he could keep up. During the race, the rat encountered a river. It was too small to cross the river on its own. The rat climbed onto the ox's back as the ox was about to cross the river. The diligent ox did not mind one bit and simply carry on its journey. Once the ox finally crossed the river, the rat jumped ahead and won the race. The ox came in second place.  Thanks to its quick wits, the rat managed to be the first animal in the zodiac calendar.

The Fast and Competitive: The Tiger & The Rabbit

The tiger and the rabbit, although did not wake up early, managed to snatch the third and fourth place. They were both fast. However, between them, the tiger was faster. The rabbit got a little bit left behind when crossing the river as it had to jump from one stone to another.

The Good-Looking Dragon and The Crafty Snake

Although the dragon could easily fly over to the Heavenly Gate, the dragon for a while at the river to help the animals who were struggling. The dragon somehow won fifth place and the snake caught up in sixth place.

However, others told this story differently. Due to its good looks, the Jade Emperor allowed the dragon to be fifth place. The Jade Emperor mentioned that the dragon's son could win the sixth place; unfortunately, the dragon's son did not come to the race. The snake stepped up and claimed himself to be the dragon's adoptive son, and got the sixth place.

The Kind and The Modest: The Horse & The Goat

Both the horse and the goat are kind and modest animals. As they arrived at the gates, they both tried to let the other one went in first. The Jade Emperor acknowledge their kind and modest attitude and named them the seventh and eighth animals in the zodiac.

The Jumping Monkey

The monkey got left behind. In order to catch up, the monkey jumped and swung from tree to tree and eventually arrived at the ninth place.

The Teamwork: The Rooster & The Dog

The rooster and the dog worked together to cross the river. As they both arrived at the gates the same time, the dog allowed the rooster to go first as the dog felt the rooster deserved it more.

The Sleeper: The Pig

The pig did not actually got left behind in the first place. However, the pig got hungry along the way. The pig stopped to eat but eventually fell asleep. As soon as it woke up, it managed to grab the last spot; thus, becoming the twelfth animal in the zodiac signs.
